Ukraine And Its Position on Brzezinski's Grand Chessboard

Throughout the conflict currently taking place inside Ukraine, it is often a frustrating ordeal to attempt to explain the hidden mechanisms at work in the battle for the strategically vital European nation.

Indeed, to convey the fact that the initial Euromaidan protests were instigated by the United States and Anglo-European powers in order to gain a strategic advantage over and antagonize Russia is difficult enough.

To further explain that Russia, who has geopolitical and imperial aspirations of its own, is acting defensively in its response to the destabilization efforts while, at the same time, attempting to extend its own level of control over Ukraine, is an equally difficult task.

However, assuming that the complex nature of the Ukrainian situation can be accurately conveyed, one question that almost always arises is “Why?” “Why is Ukraine so important?”

In order to answer this question it might serve us well to consult the work of powerful insider Zbigniew Brzezinski in his book The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy And Its Geostrategic Imperatives.

It should be remembered that it was in this very book that Brzezinski uttered the famous statement that “America is too democratic at home to be autocratic abroad. This limits the use of America’s power, especially its capacity for military intimidation. Never before has a populist democracy attained international supremacy. But the pursuit of power is not a goal that commands popular passion, except in conditions of a sudden threat or challenge to the public’s sense of domestic well-being.”[2]

The book, written in 1997, seemed to lament the fact that the public would not support such blatant imperialism unless they truly viewed the crusade to be in their own immediate self-interest. Only fours year later, the public would receive such a “sudden threat or challenge” to their “sense of domestic well-being” in the form of the 9/11 attacks.

However, the Grand Chessboard discusses so much more than the lack of desire to wage war by the general public absent a perceived external threat. The book discusses in detail the various major players in the geopolitical game and the methods they may use to achieve their goals of hegemony.

In this book, Brzezinski explains briefly the role that Ukraine plays in the geopolitical back-and-forth between the United States and Russia as well as the delineations these three countries fall under when attempting to analyze the geostrategic imperatives of the two major powers.

For instance, in the section entitled “Geopolitical Players and Geostrategic Pivots,” Brzezinski defines the major geopolitical players in the geopolitical game as well as those nations that are too weak to act as anything other than pawns or, at best, crafty tightrope walkers balancing and encouraging conflict or cooperation between those nations that seek to dominate them.

Brzezinski defines these roles by stating,
Active geostrategic players are the states that have the capacity and the national will to exercise power or influence beyond their borders in order to alter – to a degree that affects America’s interests – the existing geopolitical state of affairs. They have the potential and/or the predisposition to be geopolitically volatile. For whatever reason – the quest for national grandeur, ideological fulfillment, religious messianism, or economic aggrandizement – some states do seek to attain regional domination or global standing ... They thus take careful stock of America’s power, determine the extent to which their interests overlap or collide with America, and shape their own more limited Eurasian objectives, sometimes in collusion but sometimes in conflict with America’s policies. To the Eurasian states so driven, the United States must pay special attention.[1]
As for the geopolitical pivots, Brzezinski describes them by writing,
Geopolitical pivots are the states whose importance is derived not from their power and motivation but rather from their sensitive location and from the consequences of their potentially vulnerable condition for the behavior of geostrategic players. Most often, geopolitical pivots are determined by their geography, which in some cases gives them a special role either in defining access to important areas or in denying resources to a significant player. In some cases, a geopolitical pivot may act as a defensive shield for a vital state or even a region. Sometimes, the very existence of a geopolitical pivot can be said to have very significant political and cultural consequences for a more active neighboring geostrategic player. The identification of the post-Cold War key Eurasian geopolitical pivots, and protecting them, is thus also a crucial aspect of America’s global geostrategy.[2]
Brzezinski also notes that “although all geostrategic players tend to be important and powerful countries, not all important and powerful countries are automatically geostrategic players.”

Still, he breaks the world down into five countries that he considers geostrategic players and five which he considers to be geopolitical pivots. Since Brzezinski is writing his book from the point of view of an American imperialist, it should be accepted that the United States is also considered to be a major geostrategic player, thus bringing the count in that category to six.

With that in mind, Brzezinski’s major geostrategic players include the United States, Russia, China, India, Germany, and France. Interestingly enough, while significant enough to bear honorable mention, Great Britain, Japan, and Indonesia do not qualify as major geostrategic players.

The five major geopolitical pivots are then listed in the form of Azerbaijan, South Korea, Turkey, Iran, and Ukraine.

Although Brzezinski spends time discussing each of these nations individually, it is his statements regarding Ukraine that concern us here. Brzezinski writes,
Ukraine, a new and important space on the Eurasion chessboard, is a geopolitical pivot because its very existence as an independent country helps to transform Russia. Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be a Eurasian empire. Russia without Ukraine can still strive for imperial status, but it would then become a predominantly Asian imperial state, more likely to be drawn into debilitating conflicts with aroused Central Asians, who would then be resentful of the loss of their recent independence and would be supported by their fellow Islamic states to the South.[3]
Clearly, although a major geopolitical pivot for any nation attempting to assert its imperial will, Ukraine stands as a much more important player for Russia than it does for the United States. As Brzezinski writes, “Without Ukraine, as already noted, an imperial restoration [for Russia] based either on the CIS [Commonwealth of Independent States] or on Eurasianism was not a viable option. An empire without Ukraine would eventually mean a Russia that would become more “Asianized” and more remote from Europe.”[4]

Later, Brzezinski also points out the necessity of the Ukrainian connection to Europe for Russia’s own European connections. He states, “The key point to bear in mind is that Russia cannot be in Europe without Ukraine also being in Europe, whereas Ukraine can be in Europe without Russia being in Europe.”

Brzezinski pretends that Russia’s self- interest involves greater integration with Europe. Indeed, Brzezinski clearly suggests that a model Europe would involve a united land mass that stretches from the UK to the Ural mountains. He states that “It is to be hoped that a cooperative relationship between an enlarging Europe and Russia can move from formal bilateral links to more organic and binding economic, political, and security ties ... An association or even some form of membership for Russia in the European and transatlantic structures would in turn open the doors to the inclusion of the three Caucasian countries – Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan – that so desperately aspire to a European connection.”[5]

Of course, the national interests of Russia would most certainly not lie with the integration of itself with Europe. Indeed, this has been against the national self-interest of every nation that has joined the E.U. to begin with as they all have inevitably sacrificed their national sovereignty, economies, and personal freedoms for the benefit of a massive European Soviet that now issues dictates down to the lowest levels.

In addition, it should be pointed out that the E.U. was by no means an organic operation. Despite the protest of the vast majority of Europeans, the E.U. was forced down the throats of the population despite repeated popular votes against the union. Indeed, the E.U. was entirely a creation of the political elite as far back as 1954 in the first of what is now termed the infamous Bilderberg meeting.

Still, it is important to point out that, despite Brzezinski’s visions for Europe and Russia, the importance of Ukraine in that dynamic cannot be understated. As Brzezinski writes,
Indeed, the Ukraine’s relationship to Europe could be the turning point for Russia itself. But that also means that the defining moment for Russia’s relationship to Europe is still some time off – ‘defining’ in the sense that Ukraine’s choice in favor of Europe will bring to a head Russia’s decision regarding the next phase of its history: either to be a part of Europe as well or to become a Eurasian outcast, neither truly of Europe nor Asia and mired in its ‘near abroad’ conflicts.[6]
Notice that, in this statement, the choices provided to Russia by Brzezinski’s philosophy are between total fealty to the European Soviet and total irrelevance. No self-respecting nation would choose either of these two options for its future and this is a fact that Brzezinski is undoubtedly aware of. Thus, it is clear that the Russians are being faced with the non-choice that is the Brzezinski doctrine, a philosophy that, when put into practice, makes conflict virtually inevitable.

With these statements in mind, it is clear that Ukraine not only stands as an important geopolitical pivot, but also as a potential tinderbox between two nuclear powers. It also becomes clear from the writings of Brzezinski, the statements of his Neo-Con counterparts, and the actions of the Anglo-Europeans, that a conflict between the United States and Russia is not feared, it is desired.

USDA goes paramilitary: Organic certifier buying submachine guns with night sites, 30-round magazines

From NaturalNews.com:

USDA

(NaturalNews) The U.S. Department of Agriculture is joining the militarization trend that's spreading like wildfire across federal agencies. Both the EPA and IRS currently have armed federal agents, and recent events involving the BLM in Nevada showed that even the Bureau of Land Management possesses a small army of long-range snipers and heavily armed paramilitary operators.

Now the U.S. Department of Agriculture is joining the militarization bandwagon, publishing a solicitation (# USDAOIGWEA-5-7-14) requesting "submachine guns, .40 Cal. S&W" with "Tritium night sights for front and rear, rails for attachment of flashlight (front under fore grip) and scope (top rear), stock-collapsible or folding, magazine - 30 rd."

In other words, the USDA is now purchasing precisely the weapons that Obama famously said belong "in the hands of soldiers" and not "on the streets of America." Yet Obama's administration is, in fact, putting these types of weapons on the streets of America as long as they are in the hands of federal agents who increasingly patrol those streets.

"These weapons are used for night-time battle"

Natural News attempted to reach out to Linda Josey, Chief of the Procurement Management Branch of the USDA to ask why the USDA needs submachine guns with 30-round magazines and tritium night sights. She did not answer the phone, however, and her voice mail was full.

So we next reached out to Jeremy Alcede, founder and CEO of Tactical Firearms, a Katy, Texas firearms retailer and large indoor training facility that hosts training sessions for both private civilians and local law enforcement. "That class of weapon is used for night-time battle," Alcede told Natural News.

"Honestly I think the federal government is using different agencies to stockpile these weapons," Alcede continued. "I can't imagine why the USDA would need submachine guns to enforce agricultural regulations. Are they planning for a mad cow disease rampage of some kind? But then again, why does DHS need hundreds of millions of rounds of ammo? They've stockpiled enough ammo right now to have one bullet for every American."

It's true, believe it or not. Although the discovery of the massive, multi-billion-round ammo purchases by the federal government were initially derided as "paranoid conspiracy theories" by the lie-slinging mainstream media, it turns out these purchases are completely true and irrefutably documented. The federal government really is stockpiling over a billion rounds of ammunition for some yet-unknown purpose.

Tactical Firearms recently unleashed a wave of controversy across the 'net after sporting a store sign message that reads, "I like my guns like Obama likes his voters - undocumented." This sign has been widely shared across the 'net by a growing number of Americans who are increasingly frustrated by the Obama Administration's policies on a wide range of topics, including debt spending, gun control and immigration. Even many former supporters of Obama are now extremely worried to learn that Obama's government is clearly in favor of a massive build-up of guns as long as they are in the hands of federal agencies.

Here's a screen shot of the USDA's submachine gun acquisition request:

Militarization of agencies under "anti-gun" administration has observers scratching their heads

As U.S. federal agencies accelerate their militarization efforts, clashes between the feds and the public have every potential to become more violent, escalated by the radicalized armament of federal agencies.

Case in point: The recent Bundy ranch standoff in Bunkerville, Nevada, where BLM agents brought hundreds of militarized agents, snipers and government helicopters to a standoff which they claimed was about "saving the desert tortoise."

No federal agency purchases firearms unless they plan to use them, of course, yet at the same time these agencies are arming up as if for war, the Obama administration is aggressively attempting to disarm private citizens. The result can be nothing other than a radical concentration of power into the hands of federal agencies coupled with the disarmament of the People. This is precisely the kind of power imbalance that makes historians nervous. Every case of government genocide throughout history began this way, of course.

This is all being done under the excuse of "public safety," but as I reveal in my article The great government hoax of public safety, that's just a flimsy cover story.

Even gun control advocates are getting worried

This shift even has progressives concerned so much that gun control advocates are seriously starting to wonder why there are so many automatic weapons in the hands of the feds. In a story entitled How Every Part of American Life Became a Police Matter, the progressive-minded Mother Jones magazine says, "American society is starting to resemble a police state."

Such a quote might have once been scoffed at with accusations of paranoia, but today the evidence is undeniable and widespread. As Mother Jones writes:

There is the proliferation of heavily armed SWAT teams, even in small towns; the use of shock-and-awe tactics to bust small-time bookies; the no-knock raids to recover trace amounts of drugs that often result in the killing of family dogs, if not family members; and in communities where drug treatment programs once were key, the waging of a drug version of counterinsurgency war. (All of this is ably reported on journalist Radley Balko's blog and in his book, The Rise of the Warrior Cop.) But American over-policing involves far more than the widely reported up-armoring of your local precinct. It's also the way police power has entered the DNA of social policy, turning just about every sphere of American life into a police matter.

The USDA now looks to join this radicalized militarization push by the federal government, arming its agents with submachine guns -- class 3 weapons which private citizens cannot legally purchase without enduring extensive background checks and paperwork with the ATF.

The tritium sights clearly indicate the USDA anticipates "night time raids" with these submachine guns, and there's no question those raids will be conducted on U.S. soil. The only question remaining is: Who does the USDA imagine it will be raiding at gunpoint with these automatic weapons?

How tyranny is born

The answer, sooner or later, is YOU. That's how the rise of tyranny works in an emerging police state. First the weapons are for "terrorists." Then they're for "criminals." And before long, anyone who questions the government's rapid militarization is labeled an "anti-government criminal" and added to the raid list.

I happen to run a certified organic food manufacturing facility subject to USDA regulation. Now I have to legitimately wonder whether I'm supposed to expect a night-time armed raid on my facility by overzealous USDA operatives eager to play with their new submachine toys.

They wouldn't find much, of course, other than pallets of raw materials, a microbiology testing lab and food packaging equipment. But since when did the feds ever need an actual, legitimate reason to conduct armed raids in the first place? I know a man in California named James Stewart who was raided at gunpoint and thrown in jail for the "crime" of distributing fresh milk from local farms. He's still facing felony counts in Ventura for ludicrous charges related to this "crime."

When the feds want to shut you down, they can always trump up dozens of charges and have you arrested. But now, thanks to this rapid militarization effort, they can also stage armed, SWAT-style raids of our homes, businesses and farms. When the USDA has automatic weapons, night sights and 30-round magazines as part of a department of "agriculture," something has gone terribly wrong in America.

That's why I say, "Restore the Constitution!" Government was limited by the Constitution for precisely this reason: If you allow government to concentrate power, it will eventually use that power to subjugate the People. It is no longer a conspiracy theory to make the informed observation that America is more and more beginning to resemble a fascist police state, complete with the world's most massive prison system and the arming up of federal agencies that have no business with automatic weapons in the first place.

Son of U.S. Vice President Biden Joins Ukraine Gas Company

From Moscow Times:

Joe Hunter / TwitterJoe Hunter (R) standing alongside his father, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden (L) and Republican lawmaker John McCain (C).
The youngest son of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, has been appointed head of legal affairs at Ukraine's largest private gas producer — a move he said would benefit Ukrainians and the country's economy.
In a statement published on its website, Burisma Holdings announced Hunter Biden would join its board of directors and head the company's legal unit.
"As a new member of the board, I believe that my assistance in consulting the company on matters of transparency, corporate governance and responsibility, international expansion and other priorities will contribute to the economy and benefit the people of Ukraine," Hunter Biden said in the statement.
Burisma owns several Ukrainian oil and gas companies, including Esko Pivnich and Pari, Lenta.ru reported Tuesday. The company also has assets in Ukraine's Dnepr-Donetsk, the Carpathian and the Azov-Kuvan basins.
Burisma produced 11,600 barrels of oil equivalent, or boe, in 2013 and was planning to increase its production in Ukraine by 35-40 percent in 2014, U.S. financier and member of the board of directors Devon Archer told newspaper Capital in late April.
Hunter's father, as U.S. Vice President, has repeatedly rebuked Russia for its reported involvement in Ukraine and has pledged to support efforts to reduce its dependency on Russian energy.

Screeching Kettle: Who wants to play another game of global thermonuclear war?

From Screeching Kettle blog (These guys do a great job of actually gathering multiple sources of information to demonstrate a point .. a verified "blog"; unlike me, who just provide links to items with an occasional editorial note):

Who wants a new "cold war" with Russia? Do you? I certainly don't. So who does? Who benefits most from yet another round of needless tensions between two countries with enough nuclear firepower to obliterate every creature on the face of the earth ten times over?

Defense companies, for one, who rely almost entirely on the Pentagon to provide them with business.

Case in point: The U.S. announced in March 2014 that it plans to speed up a previously-stalled "missile shield" over Poland. Back in 2009, President Obama put the Bush-era idea on hold in order to get Russian cooperation on negotiations with Iran over their non-existent nuclear weapons program. The justifications at the time for the missile shield were also flimsy, with the U.S. saying that its purpose was to protect Europe from Iran. Of course in reality, the missile shield was really about Russia, which is why when we fast-forward to early 2014, we see the following reportedby NBC News:

"The NATO member [Poland] had planned to reduce the number of bidders for the system by June, but the crisis in Ukraine and concerns about Russia's annexation of Crimea have prompted officials to speed up the timetable."
How very convenient that the "crisis" in Ukraine has sped up plans for the missile shield. But I wonder who is behind the so-called "crisis" in Ukraine? Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland might be able to give us some clues.

Reports The Associated Press:

"U.S. officials blamed Moscow for the Internet leak of recordings of Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and the U.S. ambassador in Kiev discussing a possible future government for Ukraine, where Washington and Brussels back anti-Kremlin demonstrators."

Let's recap: The U.S. backs protesters in their quest to overthrow the Russian-friendly Ukrainian government and then uses Russia's response as justification to speed up plans for a $13 billion missile shield.

"I think the action in Crimea makes it abundantly clear that NATO needs to do more to upgrade its defenses," the aforementioned NBC News article quotes U.S. Congressman Stephen Lynch as saying.

Lynch is a shining example of everything that's wrong with this country not because of what him and politicians like him say, but because of why they say it. According to The Center for Responsive Politics, Lynch received $5,500 from Raytheon in campaign contributions, $2,000 from Lockheed Martin, $2,500 from Boeing, and $3,000 from General Dynamics - all defense companies, two of which are involved in the missile shield project (Raytheon and Lockheed Martin).

So who benefits from bringing the world back to the brink of a nuclear clusterfuck? Defense companies, and politicians like Stephen Lynch, who rely on defense companies to fill their campaign coffers.
