Revolution News: Brazil: “Pacification” Unleashes Terror On Favelas, Aims to Silence Anti-Capitalist Social Movements

From Revolution News:

Military police occupying slums in Rio de Janeiro, in a new wave of terror against poor people.
As thousands took to the streets this weekend to protest the civil and military dictatorship – which left a legacy of some of the most sadistic and brutal repression against political prisoners seen in Latin America – the military police have unleashed a new war on the poor of Brazil, and the State is preparing to enforce new “anti-terrorism” laws which raise legitimate fears that they will bring back the practices of the fascist dictatorship. (Note: On March 22nd, Brazilian fascists called for protests under the slogan “march for family.” They were a failure, much like the white man march in North America. In some places, groups of six or less people participated.)

Police have used fabricated reasons to justify repression against poor communities and anti-capitalist social movements, ahead of a powerfully contested Word Cup in Brazil.

A police station was set on fire, and cops came under armed attack, possibly by drug lords they haven’t “pacified” yet. Drug leaders in pacified communities are typically ex-military police, who the capitalist media misrepresent as “community leaders,” in order to forcefully associate them with social movements against capitalist oppression. The mainstream capitalist media have consistently referred to Brazilians living in favelas as “criminals,” in a clear attempt to increase hatred against poor people, who mostly have nothing to do with drug trafficking.

Underground Health: 9 Natural Alternatives To Ibuprofen and NSAIDs With No Side Effects

From Underground Health:

by MAE CHAN – Prevent Disease
How many people do you know that turn to ibuprofen to relieve inflammation and pain? This nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), available both over the counter and by prescription, is commonly used a number of painful conditions such as arthritis, menstrual symptoms, headaches, and various inflammatory conditions. However it is also linked to anemia, DNA damage, hearing loss, hypertension, miscarriage and even influenza mortality. So why not use natural alternatives that have no side effects and are just as effective?
Many studies have been done on various natural pain killers and anti-inflammatories that can be used as alternatives to ibuprofen and NSAIDs. They generally have no side effects.
1) Boswellia: This anti-inflammatory remedy comes from the Boswellia serrata tree that grows in India. The anti-inflammatory properties of boswellia are attributed to the boswellic acids that it contains. These acids improve blood flow to the joints and prevent inflammatory white cells from entering damaged tissue. Also known as “Indian frankincense,” boswellia is available as a supplement and a topical cream. For pain and inflammation, a suggested dose is 450 to 750 mg daily for three to four weeks. In one study, this decreased arthritis pain by over 80%. Use 900-1,000 mg a day.
2) Devil’s Claw: Devil’s claw is a South African herb that has active in Europe for hundreds of years. It is very effective against inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and muscle pain.
Some evidence suggests that devil’s claw works about as well as pain relieving drugs for improving osteoarthritis pain in the hip and knee. Some people taking devil’s claw seem to be able to lower their dose of NSAIDs or eliminate them completely. This evidence comes from a study that used a specific powdered devil’s claw root product (Harpadol, Arkopharma) containing 2% of the devil’s claw ingredient harpagoside (9.5 mg/capsule) and 3% total iridoid glycosides (14.5 mg per capsule). Another specific devil’s claw extract (Doloteffin, Ardeypharm) 2400 mg/day providing 60 mg/day of the harpagoside ingredient has also been used.
3) Capsaicin: The active component of chili peppers, capsaicin is often used topically to nerve, muscle, and joint pain. It works by interfering with substance P, a chemical that helps transmit pain signals to the brain. It is available as a topical cream or gels in several different potencies (most often, 0.025% to 0.075%) and is usually applied three to four times daily. It can cause some stinging and burning initially, but it typically subsides with use.
4) Cat’s claw: Uncaria tomentosa, or cat’s claw, also known as una de gato, grows in South America. It contains an anti-inflammatory agent that blocks the production of the hormone prostaglandin, which contributes to inflammation and pain. Suggested doses are 250 to 1,000 mg capsules one to three times daily. Taking too high a dose may cause diarrhea.
5) DMSO and Sweet Relief cream combined is a completely natural way to deal with chronic pain. DMSO has many uses, but it is known mostly as a natural pain killer and transporter. First synthesized in 1866, DMSO is a sulfur-containing organic compound that is derived from MSM, and can be used internally or externally. DMSO can aid injuries such as sprained ankles, sore muscles and joints, and even fractures. It is very effective in treating joint pain when combined with capsaicin which dramatically increases effectiveness.
6) Curcumin: Curcumin is a component of the herb turmeric, and it is a potent painkiller that can block proteins in the body that cause inflammation and also stops the neurotransmitter called substance P from sending pain message to the brain. Studies show that curcumin is effective in easing the chronic pain of rheumatoid arthritis. A suggested dose is 400 to 600 mg of curcumin taken three times daily for pain and inflammation.
7) Omega-3 fatty acids: The omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that have proven beneficial for people who suffer with arthritis, other inflammatory joint conditions, and inflammatory bowel diseases. Omega-3s also reduce cardiovascular risk, which is especially helpful for people with rheumatoid arthritis, which carries an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. A suggested dose of omega-3 fatty acids as fish oil is 1,000 mg daily.
8) Cannabis: An investigational cannabinoid therapy helped provide effective analgesia when used as an adjuvant medication for cancer patients with pain that responded poorly to opioids, according to results of a multicenter trial reported in The Journal of Pain, published by the American Pain Society.
When patients begin to consume cannabis, there is a notable decline in the amount of prescribed medications taken, such as antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, and pain relievers. These drugs have severe side effects. There is not one clinical study which examined the use of cannabis for pain relief where subjects were not able to reduce their drug intake.
9) White willow bark: This herb is the predecessor of aspirin. White willow bark contains salicin, which converts to salicylic acid in the stomach. White willow bark is much less irritating to the stomach than the synthetic drug, aspirin, while it works to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever. A suggested dose is 1 to 2 dropperfuls of white willow bark tincture daily.

High Times: Feds Relent On Long-Delayed Pot For PTSD Study

From High Times
BY PAUL ARMENTANO · TUE MAR 18, 2014
Health professionals, patients and state lawmakers are increasingly advocating for cannabis as a therapeutic option to address the stress and painful memories associated with post-traumatic trauma. Yet, to date, virtually no controlled clinical data exists assessing the plant’s use by patients diagnosed with PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome).

For the past several years, researchers at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and at the non-profit drug development group MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) have sought to change this fact. Yet despite gaining FDA approval in 2010 to study the effects of cannabis versus placebo in war veterans, no subjects have yet to be enrolled in the trial. The reason? Regulators at the US National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), the federal agency that must approve the use of cannabis in any FDA-approved clinical study, have consistently stood in the way. That is, until this month.

On March 12, Sarah A. Wattenberg, Senior Advisor at the Public Health Service (PHS) sent a letter to MAPS informing the group that they have recommended that NIDA provide marijuana for their revised protocol, entitled “Placebo-Controlled, Triple-Blind, Randomized Crossover Pilot Study of the Safety and Efficacy of Five Different Potencies of Smoked or Vaporized Marijuana in 50 Veterans with Chronic, Treatment-Resistant Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).”

The recommendation marks a significant shift in PHS and NIDA policy. In particular, NIDA has previously discouraged clinicians from submitting research protocols to the agency that sought to investigate potential benefits associated with the plant. “As the National Institute on Drug Abuse, our focus is primarily on the negative consequences of marijuana use,” Shirley Simson, a spokeswoman for the agency told The New York Times in 2010. “We generally do not fund research focused on the potential beneficial medical effects of marijuana.”

But that stance may be changing, due in large part to the persistence of MAPS and the study’s lead researcher Suzanne A. Sisley, clinical assistant professor of psychology at the University of Arizona. "We never relented,” she told The Los Angeles Times in regards to their four-year battle with the agency. “But most other scientists have chosen not to even apply. The process is so onerous. … This is a great day. The merits of a rigorous scientific trial have finally trumped politics.”

While representatives from the US Drug Enforcement Administration must still sign off on the trial -- an additional hurdle that exists for all FDA-approved protocols involving a schedule I prohibited substance -- the study’s investigators do not expect the anti-drug agency to halt the trial from finally moving forward.

Once approved, the privately funded pilot trial will assess potential risks and benefits associated with the use of cannabis for war veterans suffering from PTSD, including the plant’s potential impact on subjects’ anxiety, suicidality, and depression. Recent brain imaging research provides researchers with a reason to be optimistic about the plant’s prospects as a potential agent in the treatment of traumatic memories. According to a May 2013 study published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, subjects diagnosed with PTSD may experience a decrease in their natural production of anandamide, an endogenous cannabinoid neurotransmitter, resulting in an imbalance in the brain resulting in excessive fear and anxiety. “The data reported herein are the first of which we are aware of to demonstrate the critical role of CB1 (cannabinoid) receptors and endocannabinoids in the etiology of PTSD in humans,” the study’s authors concluded.

A separate review published in 2012 in the journal Drug Testing & Analysis similarly acknowledged: "Cannabis may dampen the strength or emotional impact of traumatic memories through synergistic mechanisms that might make it easier for people with PTSD to rest or sleep and to feel less anxious and less involved with flashback memories.” Authors concluded, “Evidence is increasingly accumulating that cannabinoids might play a role in fear extinction and anti-depressive effects.”

It's only a matter of time before common sense prevails and marijuana is, at the very least, decriminalized in the U.S. I don't use it myself, but who am I to tell others what they can or can't put into their bodies? Women have a right to choose whether or not to abort a fetus, but not the right to inhale smoke from a plant that's been around since long before we were civilized?

Ron Paul: US 'democracy promoting' kills democracy

In his latest op-ed penned to tackle the crisis in Ukraine, former congressman Ron Paul writes that the United States is destroying democracy overseas by spending billions of dollars to influence change abroad.
The staunch anti-interventionist and longtime member of the US House of Representatives has weighed in regularly about the situation in Ukraine in recent weeks, and just last Monday wrote an editorial published in USA Today advocating for the American government to distance itself from further involvement in the recently passed referendum in Crimea that’s considered by the White House to be illegal.
On Sunday this week, Paul again penned a new column, this time condemning the US Department of State’s ongoing efforts in Ukraine that are being billed as democracy-building endeavors.
In his latest op-ed, Paul recalls being in Congress nearly a decade ago and becoming concerned“about millions of dollars that the US government-funded National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and its various related organizations spent to meddle in Ukraine’s internal affairs.”
According to remarks made by Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland last December and cited by Paul in this week’s column, the amount of US funds going towards the NED’s efforts in Ukraine have totaled more than $5 billion since 1991.
“That five billion dollars appears to have bought a revolution in Ukraine,” Paul wrote. “But what do the US taxpayers get, who were forced to pay for this interventionism? Nothing good.”
And according to Paul, high-funded intervention doesn’t equate to spreading democracy. Instead, he wrote, the US has invested in a country where power has been passed along not by the way of a democratic election, but rather the ousting of the country’s presidents by his opponents.
“Supporters of NED and its related organizations will argue that nothing is wrong with sending US dollars to ‘promote democracy’ overseas. The fact is, however, that NED, USAID, and the others have nothing to do with promoting democracy and everything to do with destroying democracy,” he added.
“It is not democracy to send in billions of dollars to push regime change overseas. It isn’t democracy to send in the NGOs to re-write laws and the constitution in places like Ukraine. It is none of our business,” he added.
Paul’s latest remarks come less than a week after he blasted the White House for meddling in the Crimea situation by asking, “Why does the US care which flag will be hoisted on a small piece of land thousands of miles away?”
“Where were these people when an election held in an Iraq occupied by US troops was called a ‘triumph of democracy’?” he asked.
This week, Paul wrote that the US could actually perhaps promote democracy overseas, but first sanctions and blockades should be lifted.
“We can promote democracy with a US private sector that engages overseas. A society that prospers through increased trade ties with the US will be far more likely to adopt practices and policies that continue that prosperity and encourage peace,” he wrote.
Those remarks come in the midst of an ongoing back-and-forth between Washington and Moscow in which officials have taken turns imposing sanctions against overseas adversaries. On Monday, Russia announced that a new round of sanctions against Canadian officials will be imposed to retaliate against that country’s own recent actions.

Homeland Security Exercise Targets “Free Americans Against Socialist Tyranny”

"Leaked documents reveal plan to counter online dissent during martial law

Leaked Homeland Security documents obtained by Infowars reveal details of a joint DHS/FEMA national exercise set to take place this week, one of the components of which revolves around an effort to counter online dissent by a group called “Free Americans Against Socialist Tyranny,” which is disgruntled at the imposition of martial law after an earthquake in Alaska.

The document again underscores the federal government’s obsession with characterizing libertarians and conservatives as some kind of extremist radical threat."

Very important to keep in mind when thinking about "antiterrorism" laws -- who defines "terrorist"?

Introduction from the Editor

You didn't find this page by accident. You have stumbled upon this page for a reason. Bear with me as I get myself organized to present things in a concise, easy-to-access way. Here is what this page is all about:

For years I've been "that guy" on internet message boards always sharing articles and news stories. Everyone who knows me knows that I like to keep people informed. So my brother proposed to me that I create my own news website. I guess he just got sick of seeing me share so many news articles on my personal Facebook page. Either way, I figured that would be a good idea, so here we are today.

This blog is NOT intended to sway your political or spiritual beliefs. It IS intended to challenge you to broaden your worldview. About 8 years ago I came to the realization that "truth" cannot be found in news stories. What news stories are, are retellings of events through the perspective of the reporter and editors. As we know, we can all experience the exact same event differently based on our unique perspectives. So you will find that sometimes I will share stories that I do not even personally believe or adhere to. I do not consider myself to be a conspiracy theorist, but I am open to the possibility of conspiracies.

With that being said, seeing an article shared on my blog does not mean I have given it my personal endorsement. It simply means that I have found evidence to be considered when formulating opinions about things. I am somewhat of a political atheist. The point is to get my readers to look deeper and find that everything is merely an illusion, and truth can only be found within. Occasionally I will add my own personal thoughts on a story. But for the most part, the point is merely to encourage you, the reader, to challenge your own personal worldview.

Thank you,
Aydin Adam
